| A new city report says Cape Coral’s wealthiest residents live in the west, and many of the city’s newer residents have more disposable income than those who have lived here for decades.
The citywide median household income in 2007 was $53,549, while the average household income was $65,699, according to the report. Figures suggest Cape residents are in better shape than the rest of Lee County’s population.
Penned by Cape Coral economic development director Michael Jackson, a new demographics report relied on statistical data from Redlands, Calif.-based Environmental Systems Research Institute, a widely used commercial data resource.

The ESRI figures for 2007 showed the median age in Cape Coral rose from 42.6 in 2000 to 43.4 in 2007.
Cape Coral was maintaining a high average income per household, although different areas of the city boasted different levels of wealth, the report said.
“It shouldn’t be a surprise that households near the water are wealthier,” Jackson said. “But this data validates that.”
The report provided regional data in each of six Cape Coral ZIP codes in 2007.
