Nestled in the back of the Marina at Cape Harbour, among the palm trees, the condos and the yachts, Jennifer Takasawa teaches a group dog training class.

“A dog needs to make significant improvement in their private lessons before they are allowed to graduate to the group class,” said Takasawa, who is a certified trainer for The Canine Coach.

The Canine Coach is a collection of professional dog trainers who teach owners how to understand their dog’s behavior. They specialize in helping control dogs that run away, have trouble walking on a leash, experience anxiety, are prone to aggression and hyperactivity and much more, according the Web site, thecaninecoach.net.

Group classes provide challenges to dogs and their owners that mimic real-life situations. The duo learns how to handle a variety of events that might happen during day-to-day activities. These group classes are designed to maintain the results achieved during private instruction with Takasawa.

“Getting the individual attention you need will ensure the results you deserve,” said Michael Harvey, owner of The Canine Coach.

Valerie Valin was a first-timer to Takasawa’s class last weekend.

“Bailey is pretty well-behaved, but she could stand to learn how to act around strangers,” Valin said. “She can sometimes be very up front instead of sticking closer to me, so hopefully we can remedy that.”

The Canine Coach offers free in-home demonstrations. Takasawa will take this time to evaluate your dog to place him or her in the correct program.

“Every dog is different,” Takasawa said. “What works for one dog doesn't necessarily work for another, and I am here to help owners bridge those gaps so that their relationship with their pets can be even better.”
