It's a breezy Monday morning and Missy Carmean, owner and operator of Cape Coral's Baby Boot Camp, is leading seven moms and their babies through a tough, rewarding workout at beautiful Cape Harbour.

"I chose Cape Harbour because it is a beautiful community," Carmean said. "We get a great breeze through the two high-rises, we can exercise next to the water, and even sit and chat after class at Run Agrounds. Plus, the residents and the property management have really embraced my program and the moms."

Baby Boot Camp was created by Kristen Horler in 2001. It is a "stroller fitness" exercise program that has spread across the United States, Canada and even Australia. The boot camp is designed to motivate moms to get outside with their children as well as improve their strength, stamina and confidence.

Carmean is a personal trainer who is certified with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. She follows a routine that allows her students to get the maximum benefit out of every class.
Abbey Tyrna has been participating in the Baby Boot Camp class with Carmean for five weeks.

"When I started Baby Boot Camp, I was wearing a size 8. Now, I can start squeezing into my old size 4's and that is definitely all because of Baby Boot Camp," Tyrna said. "It has helped me combat fatigue, I feel less overwhelmed because I can get out and do something proactive for my health while socializing with other moms."

According to the Baby Boot Camp Fact Sheet, the 55- to 75-minute class combines highly effective interval training with targeted strength training exercises to maximize weight loss and increase muscle tone and core strength. Each workout includes upper and lower body exercises, abdominal muscle exercises, and mat-based Pilates and yoga. This exercise can also help combat and alleviate post-partum depression.

"I want the moms who attend my class to gain confidence and to feel empowered," Carmean said. "I want them to be able to prance around in front of their husband, to feel more energetic and able to take care of, and keep up with, their children, and to create a place where they can come for support from other moms."
