12:48 P.M. — Community members gathered to pray for and remember what was lost on Sept. 11, 2001 at the third Day of Remembrance at Rumrunners in Cape Coral this morning.
The event featured a list of speakers –– many of whom were in public safety positions in New York City nine years ago.

The memory of 9/11 is still very much alive for many in Southwest Florida.

More than 20 former NYC paramedics have since relocated to the area, said Randy Kraus, now a lieutenant for the Fort Myers Beach Fire Department.

Kraus lost his closest friend and partner that day, and 8 members of his EMS unit died while trying to save others, he said.

This will stay with us and haunt us for the rest of our lives,” Kraus said.

Those who gathered this morning each received a white rose to honor those who passed, and those roses were dropped into the water.

The event was sponsored by Rumrunners, the Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral, American Airlines Kiwis-Suncoast Chapter, Arthur Printing, Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce, High-Fidelity Studios and the AmericInn-Fort Myers Airport.
