If you were driving around Cape Coral Sunday morning, you might have seen groups of people running and streets blocked off. That's because the first ever Cape Coral based, Mangrove Marathon was going on. Four In Your Corner's Colleen Hogan found out what the interest is locally.

Cape Coral resident Eveque is trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

"I am a runner," Eveque said. ‘I've been running for about 18 months. This is my first full marathon."

Instead of traveling to another qualifying marathon, she can do it right here in the Cape, by running the Mangrove Marathon.

"That was a wonderful idea to offer this full marathon right here locally. It's cheaper, and we can stay right at home."

It's not just serious runners taking part. Several kids and teens, as well as recreational runners laced up their tennis shoes too.
More than 350 runners took part.

"It's just been a great response, a great response," organizer Lindsui Ulrich said.

Ulrich and her family organized the race.

"It definitely is something that people wanted."

"I think this is huge for the city actually, to have the first race in Cape Coral, in Lee County for that matter is huge," spectator Shaun Geary said, who was cheering on his girlfriend.

"I'm excited," runner Josh Myeis said. "I hear the course is really nice and I'm looking forward to it. It's my first time in Cape Coral and it's a beautiful place."

Organizers want to put on the race again next year and hopefully get some Boston qualifiers out of this one.

After everyone crossed the finish line, there was live music and awards.
